Technical Specifications



  • First rule, always remember that each coating can only be as good as the primed surface to which it is applied. For a perfect bond, it is necessary to have dry, clean and firm surfaces which are free of oil and grease.  Clean the surface with soap and rinse off with clear water to degrease.  Any sanding dust must be carefully removed with a good rub down and then all traces removed with a vacuum cleaner.  Cleanliness is vital for a superb coating finish.
  • Do not clean the substrate with solvents. Dry sanding with sandpaper grit size 80 is recommended for untreated wooden surfaces (coarse wood). Any remaining previous coats of paint must also be thoroughly sanded with sandpaper, grit size 80.  Large cracks should be milled out filled in with the same species of wood and glued with marine glue or epoxy resin.  And any projecting edges planed down.
  • Sound existing paint layers can be coated without priming, after checking carefully and sanding down.Treatment of varying surfaces:
  • SOFTWOOD: For new wood – The surface is to be sanded slightly with sandpaper (grit size 80).
  • HARDWOOD For new wood – Hardwood which contain oil and latex,  should be brushed down first with a short brush in the direction of the fibres prior to sanding.  (grit size 80).
  • SYNTHETIC MATERIAL SURFACES  will need renovating when crumbling surfaces and hairline cracking appears in the gel coat.  GRP surfaces should be free of grease and sanded down thoroughly with sandpaper (grit size 80). Remove sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner.  Please do not use any solvents! Larger or deeper cracks should be filled with epoxy resin filler and sanded down again after drying. Smaller hairline cracks can be covered with the coating.
  • STEEL BOATS – Adhesion of existing coatings must first be checked via a self adhesive tape test.  Apply a section of self adhesive tape to the surface. Press it firmly on the surface and then remove it in one brisk movement.  If the old paint layer remains intact, you can proceed to overcoat it.  Otherwise degrease the old coating and sand it down with sandpaper (grit size 80). Any rust should be removed and primed with an anticorrosive primer. Allow the primer to dry and fill any larger irregularities with epoxy resin filler.
  • ALUMINIUM BOATS – The surfaces should be sanded and treated with a thin film of wash primer.


  • WOOD:  The wooden surface must be primed with two or more coats of COELAN Boat Primer, available in yellow or red, depending on the type and appearance of wood required. The priming process must be repeated several times until the pores are filled. The relevant drying times must be observed. End grain wood must be primed several times.  Small cracks can be filled with PUR-based joint-compound (and observe their relevant drying times).  The drying time is approx 45 minutes for the primer.
  • Use a foam roller or brush to apply a generous quantity, following the grain. Consumption depends on the absorbency of the substrate, and should be approx. 200 ml per m2. CAUTION: if after priming you can still feel wooden “splinters” because of the particular type of wood concerned, sand the surface again gently before applying more primer, prior to coating.
  • SYNTHETIC LEATHER, PVC (such as inflatable dinghies, fenders, boat cushions etc.): which need to be colour coated should be coarsely sanded with sandpaper, grit size 80, and given a thin coat of FLEXO PRIMER (approx. 50 – 70 ml/m2). Drying time approx. 30 min.  When dry the coating can directly be applied.
  • POLYESTER, EPOXY RESIN, VARNISHED WOOD and STEEL SURFACES do not need to be primed, but must be sanded with sandpaper, grit size 80. CAUTION: On certain plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone, reinforced plastics etc., it is not possible to achieve any adherence. Please test the substrate beforehand. Surfaces must never be rubbed or cleaned with solvents before being coated.
  • RUBBER DINGHIES, FENDERS & SHEER RAILS – Apply a wafer-thin coat of around 50-70 ml/m2 Flexo Primer with a soft brush or rub it on with a lint-free cloth. After around 30 minutes the primer will be sufficiently dry. Please do not prime more than you can coat within half an hour! Then apply COELAN Boat Coating.
  • You can usually apply two or more coats of primer in a day, depending on weather condition.


  • TRANSPARENT GLOSS – The COELAN Boat Coating has to be applied in several uniform layers up to a total film thickness of approx. 1 mm, which will be achieved by a consumption of 1000 ml/m2. Please note that this film thickness is required to achieve the desired long-term protection. On horizontal areas, the individual coats should be applied evenly of about 5 coats with a “wet edge”, using a brush or solvent-resistant foam roller. On vertical areas, the coating should be diluted between 10%- 30% with the thinner depending on relative humidity. This will avoid a “settling down” of the material. The number of individual coatings then has to be increased accordingly (approx. 8 to10 coats). Depending on atmospheric conditions and relative humidity, the drying period for each coat is between 2 to 6 hours. Intermediate sanding will only be necessary when there are longer intervals between applying the coats, i.e. approx. 2 weeks. The individual layers must not be cleaned or rubbed down with solvents. Particularly good results can be achieved by spray painting. The viscosity has to be adjusted to the spraying method using the thinner (e.g. at low pressure 0.7″ nozzle to 40-35 DIN sec. – DIN 4-measure). Please note that spraying losses result in greater consumption rates.
  • TOP COAT – TRANSPARENT SILK FINISH – If a silk finish surface is required, the above gloss coatings can be covered with COELAN Boat Coating Silk Finish as soon as the last coat has dried. Please do not apply this coat too thickly, as the silk-finish effect will not be achieved. Consumption will be approx. 200 ml/m2. NOTE: Please do not apply the silk-finish top coat to deck surfaces because of the danger of skidding.


  • Thinner can be used to clean brushes and to “thin” the coating.  On vertical areas, the coating should be diluted between 10%- 30%, and on horizontal surfaces about 10%.
  • COELAN Retardation Agent is a liquid additive that is required for coating applications in hot and humid conditions.  Retardation Agent thins the coating and as a result more layers of coating are required to reach the required thickness. The number of individual coats should therefore be increased corresponding to the rule – check Coelan instructions when adding Retardation Agent to your coating.  This product is at present  not available.
  • COLOURED GLOSS – The coloured COELAN Boat Coating is used for renovating older polyester and fibreglass boats. The gel coat provides hair cracks with a durable cover. Steel and colour painted wooden substrates achieve a durable protection by using the Boat Coating. The desired colour can be produced by adding  COELAN Colour Paste (contents: 37 ml/tube) to the transparent coating and then mixing with a paddle.  To achieve the different colours according to the colour scheme or individual colours please use the complete tube contents. Mix the colour paste and the COELAN Boat Coating until it is free from bubbles and streaks to achieve a homogeneous mixture. The mixed material should be used immediately. USAGE: One tube per 375 ml COELAN Boat Coating (2 tubes per 750 ml–8 tubes per 3 l) All colours can be intermixed.
  • MULTICOLOURED BOAT COATING – To ensure a neat application, mask around the area to be coated with self-adhesive tape. The tape should be coated over and then removed immediately while the coating is still wet. The mix is 900ml COELAN Boat Coating with 600g coloured flakes in a separate pail (approx. 2 kg coloured flakes with 3 l of COELAN Boat Coating). Stir the mixture carefully with a stick before application. If silver or gold glitter is required, the glimmer can be added directly into the pail and stirred up evenly. The material can now be applied onto the prepared substrate by simply pouring it out of the can and spreading it with our special spatula in all directions until the substrate is no longer visible. This application to be a minimum film thickness of 1.7–2 mm.  PLEASE NOTE The tape needs to be removed immediately after coating the substrate.


  • Anti-slip particles for decks and walking areas.  It is most important to sprinkle anti-slip on the last coat as Coelan may be slippery when wet.  Where resistance to skidding is vital, scatter anti-slip particles onto the coating. For treating larger areas, anti-slip material can naturally also be scattered into the still wet coating using a sieve. Consumption approx. 50 – 100 g/m2.  After drying for approx 12 hours, remove the surplus of loose glass beads.  If free from dirt and debris these beads can be used again.  Patterns can be formed by applying masking tape to the surfaces. There are other anti-slip materials available from reputable paint suppliers.


  • Remove all fittings before sanding down.  If you cannot remove deck fittings and the like, you can apply approved sealants along the edge of these fittings and deck.
  • SOFTWOOD renovation – the surface should be sanded with an electric sander (grit size 80) thoroughly down to the sound wood.
  • Sound existing paint layers can be coated without priming, after checking carefully and sanding down.
  • TEAK Renovation is often required due to worn fibres and planks. It is essential to measure the moisture of the wood and to ascertain whether there is water between deck and planks. Wood moisture also should be measured in the core range. Drill a 8mm deep hole at the deepest end of the deck and check with a piece of convoluted kitchen paper whether there is water beneath the wood. If so, take one plank off each side of the gangway and wash it out with clear water. Please check and if necessary repair all deck joints and cracks, remove loose jointing compound, and with a sharp object (knife, chisel or scraper) clean the bonding surface of the joint and remove loose material with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Other existing treated surfaces should be coated without priming, after checking carefully and sanding down (grit size 80).  Please check for compatibility.

7. TIPS (on repairs, storage etc)

  • Good working results require good tools.
  • If possible have your boat lifted into a dry protected area for the application, the decks mustn’t be exposed to rain and preferably not direct sunlight during the process of 24 hours before.
  • Purchasing a moisture meter is a good investment, before using Coelan as the moisture content of the wood needs to be down to 15%.
  • We recommend the use of foam roller and, for smaller areas, good quality brushes.
  • Always sand wood in the direction of the grain.
  • Always use sanding paper grit size 80, for sanding wood, plastic and steel. An electric sander is suitable to use. For joints with sharp edges, you will find a surface angle grinder helpful. Sprayed coatings, without (coloured) mist, can be treated with the HVLP-turbine in a low pressure spraying process.  Hot air guns are very useful for stripping old surface treatments.
  • The suitable application temperature 5°C –max. 30°C.
  • Do not apply COELAN Boat Coating in direct sunlight.
  • The viscosity of the coating can vary depending on temperature and storage condition. If necessary dilute with thinner.
  • The COELAN Boat Coating system is a moisture hardening product, therefore containers should be used up after opening.
  • Containers – Do not open the container until ready to apply as Coelan boat coatings cure on exposure to humidity, we suggest if you do not use all the contents of the boat coating container, cover the coating in the tin with plastic film so that the exposure to the air in the can is minimized and turn tin upside down when storing.  Often opened tins contain cured material. Filter if necessary.
  • If you can foresee that the material will not totally be used, use as much COELAN Boat Coating as you need and then fill the can with dry air by means of a hair dryer or a hot-air gun.
  • Use clean (salt)water to clean the coating.  Water soluble cleaner without alcohol (low-level pH-value up to 7) can also be used for cleaning.
  • REFURBISHMENT & REPAIR – Damaged coatings should be repaired immediately.  Cut out a clean square (or regular patch),  and sand down the damaged parts diagonally with sandpaper (grit 80). The depression should be filled layer by layer with COELAN Boat Coating.
  • WOOD – The retained humidity in wood should be less then 15%. In the case of older wood it is also necessary to check the retained humidity in the core area.  Hard wood, hull interiors, superstructures and deck planks may  need to be vapour sealed internally to avoid steam diffusion from inside to the outside.
  • Ensure that there is no water beneath a mounted deck and that no water can penetrate at any time.
